Heb erg aan hem gedacht en ook sterk voor hem gechant. Moge hij in een volgend leven minder last van opvoeding en klasse hebben.

John was altijd jouw ex but not quite ex, ik weet hoeveel je van hem hield en kon me er een voorstelling van maken hoe jullie liefde geweest was, met de nadruk op was want van die liefde was van zijn kant niets te merken. Hoe hij tegen je tekeer ging in de prachtige tuin in Marbella, als ik nog in bed lag. Of was dat dolveel liefde omdat zijn motto was: An Englishman’s way of saying: “I love you” is a put down.’? Volgens mij heb jij gelukkig op tijd begrepen dat dat geen liefde was en wat liefde wel is.

Is het niet intriest als iemand alleen op die manier meent uitdrukking te kunnen geven aan liefde?

Tekenend voor zoiets dieptriest is ook zoals hij aan zijn einde is gekomen. Alleen daar op die berg in die ouwe zooi, creperend van de pijn, wetende dat hij gemeden bent vanwege zijn scherpe tong en dronkenschap. De enige die misschien nog wat om hem geeft maar waarvan hij weet dat het waarschijnlijk niet eens zo is, is dat zigeunerhoertje Paloma, al laat zij hem ook creperen.

Met de dood op je hielen en hevige pijnen lijdend reed hij die berg af, want dat moet ik hem nageven: tot de dood een goede chauffeur. En dan sterft hij op straat.

Wat een dood.

Afschuwelijk.

Hij was fysiek denk ik ijzersterk. De keren dat ik hem dagelijks zag was hij twee keer op een dag dronken. Eerst zo rond lunchtijd tot de siësta en dan vanaf het ontwaken tot hij weer ging slapen. Ongelooflijk hoe die man kon drinken.

Ik vond hem geen slecht mens maar hoe hij jou behandelde was beneden alle peil. Dat kon ik hem niet vergeven. Zijn leven is nu beëindigd. Hij heeft zichzelf in de weg gezeten. Hij had veel potentieel maar bralde teveel.

REQUIEM FOR A FIRY REBEL ; JOHN DRUMMOND

For 16 years John Drummond has lived in Rocio de Nagueles, Marbella with Xaviera Hollander of Happy Hooker fame. During the first 6 years

of their tumultuous relationship they had a lot of fun, wrote two books together:

HAPPILY HOOKED AND LET’S GET MOVING and he assisted her with her sex advice column CALL ME MADAM in Penthouse Magazine. In the meantime John himself had his own column in the Reporter.

This odd couple traveled the world extensively for many years but always came back to Spain. They both had the occasional polyandrous affair but between the two of them there was definitely an incredible body and mind chemistry.

Finally when they really broke up John moved back to Fuengirola where he spent the last 4 years of his life in his own finca up in the mountains near Mijas Golf.

It is en route to the hospital in Fuengirola on Friday March 20 that John Drummond, who had been suffering from incurable prostate cancer for the last few years , and had reached the end of his rope, collapsed on the staircase to the ambulatory. He was accompanied by his faithful friend John Searles. Reanimation did not help. John Boris Drummond died a quick and painless death of a heart attack at the age of 79.

In his youth he used to live in London for many years, where he was a dealer in second hand old timer cars, a sculptor and a painter. The cold weather drove him to visit Spain, where he soon after decided to settle down. In the early seventies he made his living as an art director for commercials , together with Eddy Vorkapich. When he met Xaviera he was referred to as “John de las mapas “as he ,with his artistic talent, made beautifully drawn maps of various cities up and down the coast with commercial locations like bars, restaurants or other interesting sight seeings. Even the police station in Fuengirola has

one of their walls adorned with this map. He held his office mainly in LA CEPA bar at the Plaza de la Constitution ( now closed) John did not need a phone, his voice was usually loud and boisterous and he liked his liquor but never lost control. His wit was sharp and often biting.

He and Xaviera were often referred to as a “WHO IS AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF “kind of couple They were perfectly matched and very verbal and temperamental. His famous quote was :

“An Englishman’s way of saying: “I love you” is a put down.”

His sardonic sense of humour and cutting remarks will be missed by many both in Marbella as well as Fuengirola.
